This research doctorate prepares scholars and teachers in specialized areas of theological studies. What sets it apart is a theological lens on how Christian institutions and traditions developed, how their communities live and believe, and what ethics they hold, with other faiths included when resources permit.
Graduates are expected to hold teaching and research posts at seminaries, divinity and theology schools, and church-related colleges. Admission is tied to one track and concentration, so moving to a different concentration later is treated like a fresh application needing a petition and a new advisor's consent.
Applicants should hold a Master of Divinity or comparable graduate degree in theology or a suitable discipline, and may need to complete extra prerequisites. Past graduate work must average 3.3 or above. Test scores from the GRE are not wanted, while applicants from abroad who are not native English speakers send TOEFL results.
