Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is an Sc.B. concentration asking how life operates at the molecular scale. It is overseen by the Department of Chemistry together with its counterpart department for molecular and cell biology and biochemistry.
Early on, the field studied proteins, nucleic acids, fats, sugars and small molecules like vitamins. Its approach now reaches neuroscience, development, immunology, pharmacology and synthetic biology. Training starts from mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, with helpful electives in engineering, geology and computer science.
A central element is a full year of hands-on research with a Brown faculty member, with sponsors coming from Chemistry and from the biology and medicine division, covering basic science and clinical faculty.
Requirements, course listings and advising arrangements are set out on the program's page at Brown, and applicants should read it alongside the sponsoring unit's own site.
