Biomedical engineering applies methods from established branches, like mechanical, materials, electrical and chemical, to challenges in biology and medicine. Projects range from fundamental physiology research to medical devices, biotechnology and improvements in how care is delivered. The field is wide-ranging, so students need grounding in engineering science and in physiology and related life sciences.
The Bachelor of Science includes concentrations. Bioinstrumentation, for example, trains students for entry-level positions in the medical device industry that need electrical engineering strength. Alternatively, students can follow an individualized plan, selecting support and technical electives with an advisor; this is the default for undecided students.
ABET accredits the program. Its first stated outcome is the ability to define and resolve complex problems using engineering, science and math.
