Overview

Biomedical Engineering is offered as an A.B. concentration through Harvard College. It sits where the physical and life sciences meet, drawing on physics and chemistry to explain how living systems operate. The concentration is relevant to students interested in medical devices, imaging and the life sciences. The discipline is highly quantitative. Students use mathematical analysis and modeling to describe systems from the subcellular level to the whole organism. Learners apply quantitative reasoning to biological problems. The concentration aims to give a strong engineering foundation with an emphasis on life science applications, within a liberal arts education. Undergraduate applicants apply through Harvard College. The concentration is offered within an A.B. curriculum that combines engineering study with broader liberal arts coursework. Students can combine the concentration with other coursework in the liberal arts.
