BA/BS in Communication and Media Studies

The Communications major at California State University, Bakersfield leads to a Bachelor of Arts and is run by the Department of Communications. Students choose one of three concentrations: Journalism, Public Relations, or Digital Media. Coursework centers on how media function, how messages are built and spread, and what ethical and legal duties come with working in mass media. Writing skill is a recurring expectation, and the department also looks at the link between media and society from regional, national, and international angles. Project work is a large part of the experience. Journalism students put out the campus newspaper in print and online, adding podcasts and blogs. Digital Media students make video, audio, and interactive pieces. Public Relations students practice planning and carrying out communication strategies for organizations. A minor in Communications is also available.
