Chemists examine and analyze the building blocks of matter, and every other science leans on their discoveries to some extent. Chatham's major trains students in both ideas and laboratory technique.
Classes meet in the Buhl Science Complex, a laboratory building with a three-story atrium, a greenhouse, classrooms, research rooms and modern instruments for analysis. Students take part in guided research touching body function, evolution, microbes, chemistry of the environment and computer simulation.
Before their last year, interested students can apply for a ten-week summer research placement that provides more time in the lab and a stronger preparation for careers or graduate programs. Prospective students can contact the undergraduate admissions office to ask about requirements, costs and next steps, and the university offers financial awards to newly enrolling freshmen.
