Architectural Structural Design prepares students to join drafting and design teams that produce plans for commercial buildings. The emphasis is on computer-aided drafting, so much of the work happens on screen in industry software including AutoCAD, Revit and SDS/2.
Students build skills in architectural and structural drafting, steel and rebar detailing, surveying, structural analysis, and design in concrete and steel. A major project has them design a two-story building from start to finish.
The two-year associate degree is offered on the Eau Claire campus beginning in August. Typical job titles include steel detailer, structural technician and CAD technician.
The Associate Degree totals 62 credits, with a stated length of 2 years. Prospective students can ask the college whether earlier coursework or work experience qualifies for credit for prior learning, which may reduce the time needed to finish. The program page also lists career titles, program courses and an admission checklist for anyone preparing to apply.
