Overview

Cornell's English major is run by the literatures department. It builds skills in reading, research, critical analysis and clear writing through British, American and Anglophone literature across many periods and regions. Students explore both traditional and innovative fields of literary study together with a range of theoretical approaches. The requirements form a flexible framework, and each major works with an advisor to shape a coherent plan, with an optional concentration and an Honors Program. English pairs well with a second major, and first-year students are encouraged to take a writing seminar on literature.
