PhD in English Language and Literature, General

This doctoral program admits a small entering group each year, which allows individual attention and a generous support package described by the department. Faculty expertise is broad, covering literary, theoretical and cultural areas. Each student assembles a three-person faculty committee and designs their own course of study within a broad departmental framework. Course selection, examination design and the choice of minor subjects outside the department are all flexible. Interdisciplinary projects can draw committee members from fields including comparative literature, Romance and Germanic studies, history, classics, linguistics, government and philosophy.
