PhD in Romance Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics

The Romance Studies PhD is a graduate field in the Graduate School that offers interdisciplinary study of Romance languages and literatures. Faculty come from several departments, including comparative literature, history, anthropology, and Near Eastern studies. Doctoral students choose one literature and culture track, in French, Hispanic, or Italian literatures, as their main field. Students build a working knowledge of their literary tradition's history, learn to read and analyze texts with theoretical and linguistic training, and speak and write the major language fluently. Minor fields may be chosen from any department. Many students gain teaching experience through assistantships, and a methodology course prepares new instructors for the classroom. Students focusing on French, Hispanic, or Italian usually spend one year teaching literature and culture and another year teaching language, which forms part of their training.
