BA/BS in Linguistic, Comparative, and Related Language Studies and Services

Linguistics treats human language systematically and sits at the border of the humanities and social sciences. It connects with psychology, cognitive science, philosophy, logic, anthropology and computing, and combines intuition with careful analysis. Department members work across sound systems, word structure, sentence structure, meaning and language change over time. Methods include traditional approaches along with computational linguistics and experimental work using behavioral studies, neuroimaging or corpus analysis. The major is offered within the College of Arts and Sciences. Prospective students should consult the relevant college and department about admission, advising and course sequencing, because this catalog entry concentrates on the academic content and standards of the major rather than on costs, deadlines or entrance requirements. Course plans, advising and honors options differ by college, so confirm details with the department.
