Program details

Overview

The German Studies major in the College of Arts and Sciences lets students explore their own interests in literature, philosophy, culture, society, aesthetics, media, and critical and political thought. Courses read texts and cultural artifacts closely, and seminar classes build skills in critical thinking and persuasive writing and speaking. Majors can study abroad through the Berlin Consortium for German Studies. Double majors are supported, and the program welcomes students who begin German late. Prospective majors discuss their plans with the director of undergraduate studies. Advanced placement may be possible depending on test results, and students arriving with prior language study can plan a double major or minor early. Students who pursue German Studies gain a grounding in close reading and cultural analysis that transfers to many fields.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Prospective majors must complete one course numbered 2010-2499 by the end of the sophomore year, such as GERST 2020, GERST 2040, or GERST 2060, or an equivalent.
