Overview

The liberal studies master's, known as MALS, is a graduate program at Dartmouth designed around broad, interdisciplinary study in the humanities and related fields. It is overseen by the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies, and applicants submit everything through the online application. The application asks for several recommendation letters, at least one from someone who has taught the applicant in a classroom, along with a resume and recent unofficial transcripts. Those who have been away from school for many years are invited to email the program for guidance. People hoping to join the creative writing concentration may add a short writing sample. Students who want financial aid are asked to complete the CSS Profile, and expressing interest does not affect the admissions decision. The GRE is not accepted, and international applicants must show English proficiency unless exempt.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Online application; $150 fee; 3 recommendation letters required (up to 4 accepted), at least one academic; resume/CV; unofficial transcripts; optional creative writing sample for the Creative Writing concentration; English proficiency for non-U.S. citizens unless exempt.
