The Applied Mathematics and Statistics major is a joint offering of Emory's Department of Data and Decision Sciences and Department of Mathematics. It is described as the most technically demanding option among the data science majors, with emphasis on mathematical foundations.
The degree requires 61 credit hours across twenty courses. Students complete shared core courses in calculus and data science, then add three data science electives at the 300 level or above and three mathematics electives, two of which must also be at 300 level or higher.
The major prepares students for quantitative careers, for graduate study in statistics, applied mathematics, actuarial science or financial mathematics, and for interdisciplinary graduate work in fields such as economics, the sciences and engineering.
