MA/MS in Museology/Museum Studies

The M.A. in Art and Museum Studies joins the academic study of art museums with hands-on museum work. Students take courses in museum studies and art history and complete internships as part of a thirty-credit plan. The program runs over twelve months. It links core ideas in the field with practicum courses, so graduates understand how art museums have developed and what their mission is, and can take part in debates about where they are heading. Washington, D.C., supplies much of the learning environment. Class meetings include museum visits, and faculty, curators, gallerists and other professionals contribute their experience. Students have interned at several Smithsonian museums and at the Hirshhorn and Kreeger museums. Alumni placement lists and newsletters on the program site show where graduates have gone next.
