Available areas include construction and infrastructure systems, environmental engineering, water resources and fluid mechanics, geosystems, structural engineering and materials, and transportation systems. Candidates must also take a minor field outside their main specialty. To show they can work independently, they must pass a qualifying examination, present a thesis proposal and defend the finished thesis. The thesis reports original research grounded in the scientific method and shows inventiveness plus technical command of the principles behind civil and environmental engineering. This is a doctoral degree taught at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia.
