Overview

The Ph.D. in Biology trains researchers for careers in universities, companies and government laboratories. Its center is an original dissertation, and the degree is awarded for independent scholarly contribution rather than for accumulating a set number of credits. On top of the departmental core, doctoral students need command of three areas: cell and molecular biology, whole-organism biology, and ecology with evolution. They can show this through classes or guided reading. People entering with only an undergraduate degree must close gaps in their preparation, whereas those who already hold a master's in a related area may be treated with more flexibility, after talking with the program director.

Admission Requirements: Applicants with only a bachelor's degree in biology or related discipline must make up deficiencies; entrance requirements may be more flexible for those with a master's degree (contact program director).
