Program details

Overview

This laboratory-heavy major expects lecture and lab courses to be taken in order. Students are advised to complete physics and organic chemistry before the end of sophomore year so that electives remain flexible. The core includes introductory chemistry with lab and calculus, followed by advanced chemistry courses and further electives in chemistry or approved sciences. For a degree certified by the American Chemical Society, one biochemistry course is required. Majors earn letter grades in all required courses, with C-minus or better, and credit from other schools needs the director of undergraduate studies' consent unless directly equivalent. Six credits of writing and communication are also required, satisfied by an advanced inorganic lab plus a designated elective. Students are encouraged to plan the sequence of laboratory courses early to avoid scheduling conflicts later.
