The PhD in Economics is a research doctorate run by the Department of Economics within the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. The whole department votes on each applicant, with attention to the fit between an applicant's research interests and faculty expertise.
Reviewers look at the academic record, particularly economics and mathematics courses, GRE results, recommendations and other relevant information. Admitted students nearly always show very strong quantitative scores. Applicants submit unofficial transcripts, at least two letters from people who can speak to scholarly ability, GRE scores and a curriculum vitae.
Applicants whose first language is not English must show proficiency through the TOEFL or IELTS, unless they earned a degree from a school located in the US or in an exempt country after two or more years of study at full-time status. The country of the university, not the language of instruction, determines the exemption.
