Doctoral candidates in economics pick a major subject along with two or more minors, and basic analytical economics may serve as one of them. In the first year students finish mathematics requirements and pass qualifying exams in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics.
Concentrations include econometrics, economic history, labor, health, public finance, industrial organization, international economics and economic development. Students may also look at the neighboring fields of applied economics and of management. The degree requires at least ten semesters and is delivered in person at Ithaca.
The PhD is administered by Graduate School at Cornell University and follows the academic standards set for that unit, so students should expect to meet both program and university expectations. Current course lists, degree requirements and academic policies are published in the university catalog, and applicants with questions about eligibility or the application process should contact the department or graduate field directly.
