Lamar Institute of Technology offers this applied associate degree for people who want to start a technology career quickly. Students work with software, write code and put together websites, spending much of their time on practical exercises with tools that employers currently use. The course list includes Java, C#, PHP, ASP.NET, HTML and Swift for iOS. Before graduating, each student also sits for an industry certification, picking from choices such as Microsoft Office Specialist, an Expert Rating HTML exam or one of several CompTIA credentials. Courses in the major need at least a C. Typical employers are businesses, public agencies and hospitals, where graduates take software and web development jobs, and a few of those roles can be done remotely. Full-time students finish in two years, earning sixty semester credit hours.
