PhD in Microbiological Sciences and Immunology

This research doctorate readies scientists to run independent investigations and to teach in universities, clinics or biotechnology firms. Candidates are expected to grow in originality and self-direction as well as laboratory technique. Throughout the degree, students deepen their understanding of microbes, immune defense and inflammation at the molecular and whole-body levels, learn to evaluate published research, produce new findings and follow professional ethics. They also gain practice seeking outside funding for their work. The plan of study assumes five years of full-time effort, and students may enroll part time. Applications for the autumn 2027 quarter open in August 2026 and close in May 2027. Students join a School of Medicine community that blends scientific training with spiritual values, supported by a posted cost-of-attendance estimate for the 2026-2027 year.
