BA/BS in Computer Science

The Computer Science major treats the computer scientist as a problem solver. Students learn to identify a challenge, design a computational approach and build software to address it, with uses ranging from protein research and bird migration forecasting to search engines and social networks. The curriculum starts with learning to program, then moves into building systems with boolean algebra, methods for developing dependable software, and analysis of algorithms for correctness and cost. Peer mentors embedded in introductory courses and other co-curricular activities support a learning community. The department places weight on the liberal arts, arguing that communication, collaboration and broad thinking distinguish its graduates. Alumni have taken positions at technology companies, started their own ventures and continued to graduate programs at several highly competitive universities. Faculty research is open to students.
