The Dance major explores a broad and varied art form, and the curriculum is meant to prepare each student for a career built around the arts. Students take demanding technique courses in several dance forms and study performance, choreography, music and theory, with guidance from faculty mentors.
Studio offerings cover modern dance, ballet and street styles as well as West African forms. Areas of study also include history and culture, the analysis of rhythm, and the science behind movement. Faculty teach in an interdisciplinary way and mentor each student toward a personal research direction.
Performance opportunities arise each semester at the college and with Five College Dance partners. Graduates have gone on to careers as performers, choreographers, company directors and teachers, and some work in other fields including writing, filmmaking, medicine, law and arts leadership. A minor is available.
