Astronomy at Mount Holyoke focuses on how the universe is organized and how galaxies, stars, planets, and atoms came to exist and continue to evolve. The aim goes beyond description toward reconstructing cosmic history.
Because astronomical explanation rests on theories borrowed from physics, chemistry, biology, geology, math, computing, and materials science, students are advised to build a strong base in at least one of those fields. Most often the subject is studied through a double-focus major pairing astronomy with physics. Special majors that link astronomy with geology, chemistry, computer science, or mathematics are possible, and some students instead major in one of those disciplines and add an astronomy minor.
The department also encourages experiential learning, including internships, research projects, and study or research abroad, supported by career-oriented advising. The degree awarded is a Bachelor of Arts, and faculty research is part of the program.
