Overview

Communication Studies is a bachelor of science major that centers on live, person-to-person communication and on reasoning clearly. The faculty argue that these abilities carry over into a wide range of careers, whether in sales, management, religious service or law, because every profession rewards people who can speak and persuade effectively. The sequence begins with public address, interpersonal communication and communicating in small teams. Students then study argumentation, research methods and career paths, communication theory and media literacy. They apply what they learn through a practicum and an internship and finish with an assessment. Theory-oriented and performance-oriented electives give room to tailor the degree to personal goals. Majors are expected to keep a 2.50 average in their major courses and to earn at least a C-minus in each course needed for graduation, except where a course notes a different standard.
