Overview

The sociology major is for students who want to understand human social behavior. It combines theory and research methods and lets students explore topics such as environment, class, race, gender, family and religion. The degree totals 120 credits and includes a 36 credit major with a core course, a theory course and eight credits of research methods, followed by a concentration. Students need at least a C minus in each counted course and a 2.50 cumulative average in sociology courses. General education supplies the remaining credits. Students at Northern Michigan University combine this major with general education so that they gain broad skills alongside specialized knowledge. Course sequences are listed in the current undergraduate catalog, and advisers help students plan each semester so that requirements are completed in order. Prospective students can review course descriptions in the catalog and speak with department faculty about internships, research and other opportunities.
