The Apparel Construction certificate teaches fundamentals of textiles, pattern making, advanced garment assembly, fashion history, software used in the industry and sustainable practice. Directed study adds draping, tailoring, couture construction and alterations. Graduates are prepared for entry-level work in sewing garments, stitching costumes, alterations, drafting patterns, tailoring and dressmaking within fashion and related businesses. Outcomes include hands-on skill in advanced sewing for tailoring and couture, pattern making with attention to draping and flat pattern methods, and the ability to draw designs, cut patterns, then stitch and adjust garments to client needs. A few courses run only in summer or once each year. Students are encouraged to meet with a counselor at Orange Coast College to review course selections and sequencing so the plan fits their academic and career goals. Full course requirements and the suggested plan of study appear in the 2026-2027 catalog entry.
