Cert in Applied Horticulture and Horticultural Business Services

This certificate at Orange Coast College gives students working knowledge of plants and how they are grown, placed and cared for. Coursework touches on botany, soils, ornamental trees and shrubs, and greenhouse practice, and learners complete restricted electives that steer them toward a chosen specialty. The training points toward work in landscape design, contracting and maintenance, arboriculture, nursery production, and irrigation and water management. Students also look at sustainability questions that matter in Southern California and how sound horticultural habits can support long-term resource health. Learners apply what they study to real design problems, using site conditions, drafting and a range of plant and building materials. The plan of study is arranged over two semesters, so a full-time student can map out the credential with a counselor and finish it in a short span.
