The biology major at Pittsburg State University provides a foundation for careers in research, environmental science, health care and education. Students may follow general biology or emphases in field biology topics such as plants and wildlife, with coursework involving identifying species, assessing habitats, surveying biodiversity and ecological research.
Pre-professional paths prepare students to apply to schools of medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry, chiropractic, therapy and physician assistant study. An accelerated pre-med path is also listed.
Experience outside lectures is emphasized. Students perform laboratory experiments, learn techniques ranging from biochemical tests to dissection, and assist with data collection, analysis and literature reviews in university labs or in the K-INBRE biomedical research network across Kansas. Students should consult the catalog program guide for the course requirements of each emphasis, since pre-professional paths and field biology paths involve different sequences of science and laboratory courses.
