The MS in Civil Engineering comes from the civil, construction and environmental engineering department at the University of Memphis, part of the Herff College of Engineering. Students may follow the general degree or choose a concentration such as structural, geotechnical, transportation, environmental, water resources, agricultural engineering or engineering seismology.
The degree is 30 semester hours and comes in three formats. One pairs coursework with a thesis and an oral examination. A second combines more coursework with an independent project and an oral presentation. The third is course-only and finishes with a take-home comprehensive exam.
Applicants need an engineering or closely related bachelor's degree, a minimum undergraduate GPA and three recommendation letters. The GRE is waived for stronger GPAs, and applicants with lower grades must meet minimum section scores. Applicants whose first language is not English must show proficiency with one of several accepted tests.
