This interdisciplinary major applies science, mathematics, data and statistics to biological questions. Examples include using health records to help prevent future pandemics, analyzing genetic data in the search for cancer drugs, and building computer models that support more resilient ecosystems.
Students choose one of three concentrations. The biological sciences option teaches investigating genes and proteins through mathematics and computing. The biomedical informatics option develops the technical skills for analyzing health care data and improving outcomes. The computer science and engineering option applies computing to questions about structures inside cells.
Undergraduates may have chances to join faculty research projects, gaining experience and building professional relationships.
The bachelor of science is a collaboration among the College of Arts and Sciences, the Jacobs medical school, and the university's engineering and applied sciences school.
