MA/MS in Economics

The economics MA is a one-year program that places students in the faculty, community and resources of the university's economics department. It can be shaped toward entering industry or toward preparing for a doctoral program, and it is meant for a varied group of students. The program says it is the sole master's degree offered by a highly ranked economics department in this country. Its curriculum draws on long-running research and a tradition of teaching associated with Nobel-recognized scholars. Students range from recent undergraduates to professionals midway through careers from government, nongovernmental organizations and the private sector, all of whom work on difficult economic problems with the analytical and empirical tools that characterize the Chicago approach. The program's page invites readers to apply for the autumn 2026 entry and to learn more about why students choose it, from classroom instruction to real-world experience. Applicants unsure whether to pursue industry or further study can use these pages to compare career paths supported by the degree.
