Applied mathematicians convert difficult questions into models and computational methods that explain how systems behave and support predictions. The major is offered by the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
Students build a base in math, statistics and computing, then apply it to a chosen area, for example bioinformatics, cybersecurity, physics or statistics. The plan includes calculus, discrete mathematics, systems programming, data structures, differential equations and linear algebra.
The interdisciplinary approach readies graduates to enter science, engineering, technology, finance or data analysis jobs, or to continue with graduate work. Related majors include mathematics and economics, mathematics, and actuarial sciences, so students can compare options and choose the path that best fits their interests and career plans. Students can also add an approved minor, which helps them focus the mathematical training on the field where they hope to work.
