UIC's physics department grants degrees at master's and doctoral levels. Its Master of Science gives students a foundation in both experimental and theoretical work.
Research by graduate students spans lasers and atomic physics, biophysics, materials and solid-state physics, and particle and nuclear physics at high energies.
Courses include electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, and modern atomic and molecular physics, which provide theoretical groundwork for research. Holders of the master's can continue into the department's doctoral program or take technical positions in industry and government. Before applying, prospective students can look over the research groups to see which area best fits their interests, including any plan to pursue a doctorate afterward.
