The dance BFA is a professional degree that readies students for careers in performance and choreography or for graduate study. Students pair studio practice with academic inquiry into dance theory and its application across the field.
The curriculum includes extensive technique training in ballet, modern dance, and jazz, alongside courses in dance history, composition, rhythmic analysis, the science of dance, and production. A senior project completes the degree. Special events, visiting choreographers, master classes, and three major concerts each year add performance experience, and students also draw on the shared resources of Five College Dance.
Prospective students can use the official program page to review requirements, connect with advisors, and find guidance on applying. The page also lists related offerings at UMass Amherst, which makes it easy to compare neighboring options before deciding. Contact details for the sponsoring department are provided there as well, for questions that the page itself does not answer.
