PhD in Philosophy

Miami's doctoral philosophy program prepares students for lives as professional teachers and researchers. Beyond classes and supervised research, it offers mentoring and development opportunities that extend outside the classroom. Most students enter holding a bachelor's or master's degree in philosophy. A student who begins without a master's and satisfies the necessary requirements receives that degree on the road to the doctorate. Every new student gets a faculty mentor. Professors lead seminars covering teaching, getting articles ready for journals and the academic job search, while a placement director supports graduates seeking positions. Workshops, conferences and colloquia give students and faculty informal ways to meet. Applicants should check the program's official page for current application steps, requirements and contacts, since details can change from one admission cycle to the next. Students with questions about fit, timing or next steps can contact the department or school directly for guidance.
