BA/BS in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The astronomy and space science degree at Valparaiso University gives students active roles in research from day one. They operate a 16-inch telescope at the campus observatory and use the SARA Consortium to observe remotely with partner telescopes located in Arizona, in Chile, and on the Canary Islands. Faculty also use major instruments such as Hubble and Gemini. The university describes it as one of the few undergraduate programs of its kind in the Midwest, with specialized concentrations and personal faculty mentoring. First-year students face no prerequisites but should be ready to take Calculus I. Transfer students entering in their second year should have completed two semesters of calculus-based physics with labs. All students take the Valparaiso University Experience core.
