Overview
Valparaiso University is an independent Lutheran university in Valparaiso, Indiana, about 72 km from Chicago.
It began in 1859 as Valparaiso Male and Female College, one of the first coeducational colleges in the United States, and has operated under its present name since 1905. The Lutheran University Association has owned it since 1925, and a Board of Directors that includes faculty, staff and student representation oversees its governance.
Undergraduate and graduate study is organised into the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Engineering, the College of Nursing and Health Professions, and Christ College, the honors college. Graduate Studies and a law school complete the academic structure.
The fall 2024 census counted 2,142 undergraduate and 456 graduate students, with a 12:1 student-faculty ratio and an average class size of 19.
The university describes its mission as preparing students to lead and serve in church and society, and it emphasises an honor system, service learning and study abroad. International applicants submit transcripts, a reflective essay, a passport copy and proof of English proficiency, and the university is test-optional with no application fee.
Financial aid and merit scholarships are available, and the most recent published undergraduate tuition is $50,650 for 2026-2027.
