BA/BS in Computer Software and Media Applications

The media arts and sciences major at Wellesley College is an interdisciplinary course of study shared by the computer science and art departments. It pairs creative production with analytical thinking, so students build digital media while also questioning how it is made and what it does in society. Coursework covers several strands, including user interface and experience design, game development, video production, and digital design for two- and three-dimensional work. Students learn both haptic and digital tools and study art theory alongside technical practice. Advanced studio classes center on individual projects, regular critiques, and discussion of how artists and directors treat space on screen. The major sits within a liberal arts setting, and students work in teams as well as on their own. Learning goals stress collaboration, historical awareness of media trends, and competence in both artistic and technical methods.
