BA/BS in Biology, General

The biology major gives students a deep grounding in the life sciences and how that knowledge is used. Early courses and labs establish the basics, and later courses become more advanced. Students then choose from a range of electives suited to their own career plans. The degree does not demand a minor, a second major or a certificate. Seven concentrations let students aim toward particular futures: applied genetics, applied microbiology, animal physiology and behavior, ecology, wildlife and conservation, integrative biology, molecular biotechnology, and pre-medical professions. Each lines up with several career routes and with graduate or professional study. Beyond the classroom, a student can apply as many as six credit hours of faculty-mentored independent research, or an internship, to the degree. The major calls for at least fifty-four hours of biology, with a large share at the 300 level or higher.
