Overview

This master's degree offers advanced study in the life sciences, with strong attention to testing ideas and thinking critically. Students pick either a thesis concentration or a non-thesis concentration, and the two serve different goals. The thesis path trains students for classroom teaching, laboratory work and community service and gives strong preparation for doctoral work. The non-thesis path is delivered at a distance and fits career-minded students who want flexible advanced study without extensive research training. On top of the graduate school's general rules, the department asks for a bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related discipline, or proof of adequate background. Applicants also provide a reflective statement of purpose, a current resume or curriculum vitae, and three professional recommendation letters. The statement must name the chosen path, and thesis applicants must identify a graduate faculty member willing to supervise.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Undergraduate degree in biology or related field, statement of purpose, CV or resume, three letters of recommendation; thesis applicants need an agreed faculty advisor.
