Founded 1906 in Nanjing as Jinan School.

Became National Jinan University 1927. During the Sino-Japanese War the University moved to Fujian, then to Shanghai 1946.

Merged with Fudan University and Transportation University 1949. Rebuilded in Guangzhou, acquired present status and title 1958.

Reopened at the end of the Cultural Revolution 1978.

Mainly opened to Chinese students coming from abroad, to students from Hong Kong, Macau,Taiwan, and Chinese students of foreign nationality. Part of "211 Project" universities.
