Overview
Founded 1944 as Instituo Obrero Municipal (Municipal Worker's Institute) with the mission of educating and training the working class in order to respond to the needs generated by the process of urban expansion and technological development.
Became Universidad Obrera Municipal (Municipal Workers' University) in the late 40s with an innovative proposal of customized education adapted to the conditions of working students, which was aimed at offering, free of charge, artisan, industrial, commercial and artistic education. At the end of the 60s it became Instituto de Cultura Popular (Institute of Popular Culture).
At the beginning of the 1990s, the institution ventured into higher education, under the name of Metropolitan Institute of Technology (Instituto Tecnológico Metropolitano) – ITM, with its first technological training programs and its education, research and outreach functions defined. In 2005, ITM became a University Institution, preserving its higher education technological training vocation.
