Overview
The Centre des Hautes Etudes de la Construction (CHEC), based in Arcueil, is a specialist postgraduate engineering school created in 1957 by the employer federations of the building and public works sector.
Its aim is to prepare recent engineering and master's graduates to work directly on construction projects, including highly technical structures. The school holds accreditation from the Commission des Titres d'Ingenieur, recently renewed for the maximum period of five years.
Teaching is organised into four sections: CHEBAP for reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, CHEM for steel construction, CHEB for timber construction, and CHEMEX for construction methods, pricing and site operations. Students first apply theory through supervised exercises such as load take-downs, member sizing and prestressing cable layouts, then validate their skills through professional projects carried out in groups of three, which also teaches teamwork and the internal workings of a company.
Courses cover structural analysis, soil mechanics, Eurocode design, structural design and options such as underground works or tall buildings.
Candidates apply to one section only, are assessed by a jury, and may be interviewed by video before admission.
