Overview
Founded 1289 through a bull issued by Pope Nicholas IV.
The university was suppressed by the Revolution and replaced by Faculties of Medicine; Pharmacy; Science; and Letters of the Université de France. Reconstituted as University 1896.
During 45 years between 1970 and 2015, the university was split into three universities (the University of Montpellier 1, the University of Montpellier 2 and the Paul Valéry University Montpellier 3). In 2015, the Universities of Montpellier 1 and 2 merged and became Université de Montpellier
