EEIGM was created in 1991 by the materials departments of three major European universities: University of Lorraine (UL - Collegium Lorraine INP) (France) / Universitat Polytecnica de Catalunya (UPC) and ETSEIB Barcelona (Spain)/ Universität des Saarlandes (UdS) (Germany).
Other universities have since joined the consortium: Luleå Tekniska Universitet (LTU) (Sweden) / Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV), ETSII (Spain) / National University of Science and Technology "MISIS" (Russia) / Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB ) (Belgium).
