The Academic Foundation Year (AFY) at the University of Aruba is a one-year preparatory program for students who want to pursue higher education but are not yet certain which major to choose, or who need to strengthen their study and language skills first. Teaching follows a flipped-classroom model, a form of blended learning that inverts the traditional lecture-and-homework structure so that class time focuses on applying concepts rather than first encountering them. Alongside coursework, students build consistent study habits and receive career counseling to help them decide on a future field of study. The program carries a full-time load of 60 European credits and runs on a fixed daily class schedule. Applicants need a secondary diploma such as HAVO, VWO, EPI/MBO level 4, International School of Aruba, an Ibero-American equivalent, or a CXC certificate, issued within the past year. AFY is intended as a bridge into bachelor's-level study, giving incoming students a supported transition before they commit to a specific discipline.
