Among Commonwealth Caribbean degrees, this BSc in Youth Development Work stands out as the first programme of its kind in the region, developed jointly by the Open Campus's Undergraduate Programmes Department, its Social Welfare Training Centre and the Commonwealth Youth Programme Caribbean Centre. It responds to a regional need for standardised professional training for youth workers across government services, non-governmental organisations and community groups, building toward an agreed set of Level IV youth-work competencies.
Course materials are provided online for download, though students may occasionally need reserved texts from the UWI library or university sites, or make personal purchases for some courses; open-access journals are emphasised to keep learners current with youth-development research. Delivered through UWI's Open/Global Campus, the degree runs for three years full-time or four years part-time and suits practitioners and volunteers across Caribbean youth-serving organisations.
