This Certificate in Climate Change examines how human economic and social activity has changed the make-up of the planet's atmosphere by releasing greenhouse gases, and how the resulting shift in climate threatens productive sectors and livelihoods across the region. It covers impacts such as sea-level rise, shifting water availability, effects on agricultural production, reduced landscape value, and a greater incidence of vector-borne disease and heat stress.
Because roughly seventy percent of the Caribbean's population lives in low-lying coastal cities, towns and villages, the programme pays particular attention to the direct exposure these communities face from sea-level rise. It also looks at the region's heavy economic reliance on tourism and on marine, coastal and other natural resources, which makes the sector especially sensitive to climate-change impacts. Delivered online through UWI's Open/Global Campus, the certificate suits learners wanting a focused, regionally grounded introduction to climate-change issues.
